How does the iStock Unlimited AI monthly subscription work?
The iStock Unlimited AI monthly subscription plan grants you access to our AI‑powered tools to generate new AI images and to modify images (your generated images or stock images from iStock's creative library) using Add or remove objects, Extend, Replace background, Remove background, and prompt‑based editing tools, or for upscaling a generated image to 4K for download. Additionally, our AI‑powered capability allows you to upload your existing product photo within the AI Generator and create new backgrounds that are tailored for your needs. The subscription plan gives you unlimited access to these tools, meaning that you can generate or modify as many images as you’d like during the subscription period.*
Can I use iStock Unlimited AI subscription to license a pre‑shot stock image from iStock’s image library?
No, to license a stock image from iStock’s library, you will need to purchase credits or a subscription. To find the best plan with the right price for your needs, visit our Plans and Pricing page.
Is there a daily generation cap?
There is no daily limit for Unlimited or Legacy agreements, but we do monitor for fraudulent misuse. Legacy plans include 100 generations that can be used at any time for creating or modifying images. See “I’ve purchased the legacy plan that included 100 generations. How do I know if my legacy agreement is still active?” below for more information on legacy plans.

If you still have generations left, your legacy agreement is active. Note that to remain active and avoid any unused generations from expiring, you must sign into your account at least once a year. You can see how many generations you have left next to the “Generate” button. If you have concerns, please get in touch with our Customer Support team.
Can I still purchase the legacy plan with 100 generations cap?
The legacy plan has been discontinued. You can now generate and modify images with our iStock Unlimited AI monthly subscription plan.
What are the main enhancements of the updated model?
The updated version of our model, powered by Bria, provides stronger prompt adherence, improved in‑scene text generation, and more realistic textures, surfaces, and lighting. This is on top of the previous update which delivered improvements to skin texture, leading to a more natural and realistic look in people, focuses prompt length to 100 words, 4K image quality, and output speed improvements.
I previously had free access to the Background Removal tool. Why is it now no longer available for free?
The Background Removal tool was initially offered for free to a limited number of users for testing purposes. Now it is available to all customers as part of the Generative AI by iStock service. Additionally, you can now remove the background from both images in our creative library and images generated using our AI Generator. To access all these benefits, you must purchase an Unlimited AI monthly plan and use your generations to remove the background from images.
What is the difference between AI image generations and AI image modifications?
AI image generations refer to the process of creating images from scratch in our console, utilizing text‑to‑image prompting. These AI generated images can also undergo modification using our AI‑powered image editing tools: Add or remove objects, Extend, Replace background, Remove background, and prompt‑based editing. We call this AI image modification. Modifications using our AI model can be applied to iStock’s creative image library and are likewise categorized as AI image modifications.
