In Greek and Roman mythology, Charon is the gloomy, old ferryman who brings the dead in a boat across the Dead River - mostly the Acheron, often the rivers Lethe and Styx - for an obolus (coin), so that they are brought into the empire of Hades, the ruler of the underworld. The most dangerous labor of all was the twelfth and final one. Eurystheus ordered Hercules to go to the Underworld and kidnap the beast called Cerberus (or Kerberos) Cerberus was a vicious beast that guarded the entrance to Hades and kept the living from entering the world of the dead. In Greek mythology, Cerberus is the three-headed dog - the Hound of Hades - which guards the gates to the Underworld in order to prevent the dead from leaving.
