The brothers Saints Cosmas and Damian (late third century) and visiting a patient and administering relief. Saints Cosmas and Damian (also written Kosmas and Damianos) were twin brothers, physicians, and early Christian martyrs born in Cilicia. They practiced their profession in the seaport of Ayas, Adana, then in the Roman province of Syria. Accepting no payment for their services led to them being named "Ανάργυροι" (Unmercenary); it has been said that, by this, they attracted many to the Christian faith.

Set in the medieval period, a man lies in bed with his pipe, a tankard of beer, wearing his nightcap but with no nightshirt, while his man-servant carries away his day clothes. The man, Old Boniface, is determined to keep comfortable in the rising heat by installing a barrel of Burton-brewed beer beside his bed. “Old Boniface he loved good cheer - And drank his glass of Burton - And when the nights grew sultry hot - He slept without his shirt on.” From “Nursery Rhymes - Ridicula Rediviva” illustrated by J.E. In his most notorious act, he had his first wife Elisabeth of VendA'me burned at the stake in her wedding dress, after he discovered her in adultery with a goatherd in December 999. He has been described as being a plunderer, murderer, robber, and swearer of false oaths, a truly terrifying character of fiendish cruelty."
