Death of Flying man Vincent de Groof with winged Ornithropter London 1874 A terrified man is falling through the sky, desperately clinging to a tangled winged apparatus as the hot-air balloon from which his flying attempt was launched can be seen hovering above.

On 9-7-1874 the Gas balloon "The Czar", owned and operated by Joseph W Simmons was involved in a fatal accident. It was carrying a Winged "Ornithropter" apparatus, which collapsed when released from balloon, over Chelsea, London. Vincent de Groof ( a Belgian shoemaker  ), alias 'The Flying Man' ( age 35 ) was killed.

Vincent de Groof was a Belgian shoemaker who styled himself the “Flying Man.” On July 9, 1874, he had his ornithopter launched from a balloon in an attempt to fly across the London sky. He met his death in Robert street (now part of Sydney street).
